Your Own Private Paradise
Turning a back yard into a worthy destination
With all due respect to meticulous landscaping, more of us are searching for less structured environments; those that mimic the uncertainty of nature. The iconic picnic scene. A scaled-down rendition of life-giving wilderness hikes, confined to our own backyards. If we time this project right, we could experience the ultimate staycation.
When you can skip the onerous travel and limit bringing necessities in the car, it’s a relaxing vibe that will facilitate earning love for your own digs. Aesthetics aside, home sweet home is sounding pretty good. Transforming your setting into an organic wilderness model can be just the answer.
The backyard is an excellent place to launch this project, as there are multiple potential targets. Moving past the obvious seating and lounging venues, think of extended sensory factors. Pay attention to acoustics, ensuring a low impact yet efficient delivery of sound, whether in audio systems, voice management, and impact from nature. See if landscaping can mitigate excess auditory stimuli. Consider a higher altitude for deck extensions, creating space between ground action and relaxing entertainment. Alter materials for overhead hangings, in case an unexpected rain or hail event pops up out of nowhere.
As convoluted as it sounds, emerging technologies have the potential to reverse depersonalization. Accessories, remotes, and wired electronics deliver smooth results when not much effort is required to make changes to current settings. Phone apps also come in handy, but if you prefer to conform to a no-phone-outside rule, don’t be afraid of remote control devices that make components turn on and off, to select settings, and to change light color settings. Audio systems obviously create the perfect remote operation opportunity. The point is to remain seated as much as possible.
When backyard ponds with waterfalls have the capacity to conserve water rather than waste it, and when the process to purify and beautify that water carries a light eco-footprint, we know we are both responsible stewards of nature and creative visionaries for making our exterior spaces all they can be.
